"Hah, he'll never make it!" "Come one, are you a mouse-hearted!" "I'm sure you can do it, Dapplepaw! The aforementioned apprentice blocked out the mingled taunts and encouragements from below, focusing only on gripping the slender branch he was perched on. Dapplepaw was so high up he could barely hear them anyway. The yellow hive hung before him. The young cat could see the golden honey seeping out of the entrance. Striking out, Dapplepaw scraped out a large comb of honey with his claws.
Yowling in excitement, Dapplepaw missed the sound of buzzing in his ears. Clambering down the branches, the young Tom finally heard the howls of warning from his clan-mates; "BEES!" With a yowl, Dapple raced down the tree, jumping dangerously from branch to branch.

Echosong was walking along the trail near the Hive Tree when she heard some of the apprentices screech, "BEES!!" With a hiss, she raced into the clearing to see Dapplepaw leaping from branch to branch, trying to outmaneuver the bees. She raced forward. "Dapplepaw! Get down here at once! The rest of you, run to Rush River and wait by the bank. If you see any bees, jump in the deep pool by the edge. The one under the willow tree." Turning to the tree, Echosong propelled herself upward. She landed beside Dapplepaw. "Give me the honeycomb! Give it here and run to the river!" She turned her head as the bees got louder. They were closing in. "Hurry!"

He was just one or two leaps from the ground. Dapplepaw knew it; or rather, hoped it. Imagine the apprentice's surprise when the deputy herself appears at his side, saying "Give me the honeycomb! Give it here and run to the river!" Dapplepaw froze for what seemed an eternity to him, before sticking out the paw holding the honeycomb. Hearing the drone intensify, Echosong ordered "Hurry!" Dapplepaw rushed to obey, a steady drone of WhatdidIjustdothatwasthedeputy![I/] running through his head. Dapplepaw charged toward the river. With a leap, Dapple plunged into the middle of the deceptively calm waters, remembering his swimming lesson at the last moment. A deep breath of air as his head broke the surface seemed to calm the apprentice into thought.

Taking the honeycomb in her jaws, Echosong flattened her ears to her head as her eyes stretched wide when she saw the bees coming closer. She leapt to the ground, thinking, I'm glad Dapplepaw isn't in danger... But now I am! She raced toward the river, the bees on her heels. Leaping across the riverstones, she screeched, "Go underwater!" to the floating apprentices as she jumped in with them. Feeling fur in her claws, she dragged the apprentice with her up under a ledge in the bank and into an airfilled cavern. Turning, Echsong saw that it was Dapplepaw. Shivering and cold, she spat out the honeycomb and hissed, "What were you thinking?! You could have gotten yourself killed! Your mother would have never forgiven me. What if I hadn't have showed up when I did? And you're lucky I can run so fast. Otherwise I'd be stung to death and Horsestar would be without a deputy!" She took a breath. "Explain yourself." She hated shivering in front of the apprentice but she had no choice. It always happened when she got wet.

Dapplepaw yowled as Echosong's claws dragged him underneath the water. As he was thrust into the cave, he took a deep breath and stole a glance at the honeycomb. It was ruined now. Though the debri picked up in Dapplepaw's scamper had been wasshed away, so had the honey. "What were you thinking?! You could have gotten yourself killed! Your mother would have never forgiven me. What if I hadn't have showed up when I did? And you're lucky I can run so fast. Otherwise I'd be stung to death and Horsestar would be without a deputy!" Echo song's furious rant was cut off so she could breath; "Explain yourself."
Head and tail drooping, fur soaking wet and a stutter in his voice, Dapplepaw explained; "Sh-Sh-Shadowpaw had mention-n-n-ed that Silverblaze had al-al-almost no honey-ey." Dapplepaw prepared for the admonishment, ashamed with himself.

Echosong shook out her pelt like a dog. She shivered and sighed. "I'm sorry for yelling. You should have told me. I know a special way to get a hive down without nearly getting yourself killed." She stepped closer and licked the apprentice's ear, feeling ashamed of herself. "Come on. I'll show you." Slipping back into the water, she dove down, opened her eyes, and paddled toward the surface.

Flinching as Echosong shook the water out of her pelt, Dapplepaw was glad he was not in trouble. And hopefully Twilightclaw wouldn't find out. Dapplepaw's mentor could be scary. Dapplepaw focused on swimming out of the cave, trying to keep the deputy in sight. Dragging himself on to the river bank, Dapplepaw sat up and dutifully waited for Echosong to lead the way.
