Horsestar padded softly into the Medicine Den, his small paws barely making a sound as they skimmed the ground. It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dim lighting of the den and in a moment he was able to make out the form of a she-cat. Horsestar smiled, '' Hello, Silverblaze. '' He meowed to her. It had been a few moons since his former apprentice and her parents had been attacked by badgers. The she-cat had sustained permanent injuries and had to give up her long awaited life as a warrior. Though this saddened Horsestar beyond words, he was glad to see that the she-cat had not retired to the elder's den but instead continued to play an active role in the Clan by taking up the position as the medicine cat's apprentice. '' How has your medicine training been going? '' He asked as he sat down and wrapped his tail carefully around his black paws.

"Why, hello my old mentor!" Silverblaze smiled. Seeing her old mentor was bittersweet. He had given her some of the best moments of her life, but reminded her of what she couldn't be. "It's been fine," she continued on. "It does take a bit more mental work to remember all the herbs and what they do, but I think I'll manage." She blinked and sat down beside the clan leader.

Horsestar purred gladly at Silverblaze's words, happy to see that she was adapting to Medicine Cat life. Sometimes Horsestar believed that he had been the one most saddened by Silverblaze's accident from the way she reacted to everything, but he knew that she was just being brave. He had taught her to be brave after all, though. He took a paw step forward and rubbed his muzzle against her scarred one. '' I am so proud of you, '' he meowed. Since her accident there had mostly been just silence or small talk between them, but Horsestar wanted her to know how happy she'd made her. '' Have you dreamt of your parents since the patrol..? '' The tom asked tentatively, knowing that it was still a touchy subject.

"Slightly ..." Silverblaze responded. "Enough for us to say a decent good-bye." She'd been a little taken back by the question. "They've told me how proud they are to continue doing my best to help our clan, even through their death, and my ..." Silverblaze stood up and looked into a nearby puddle. She saw the scar that had stained her eye forever, and bent her head slightly to reveal to her right eye the claw marks, never to leave her right leg. "... my .... well ... internal injuries." She suddenly blinked, as if she ended the trance she had been in. "I can't take all the credit though. You're the one that taught me loyalty and the ability to forever serve my clan, not matter what." She smiled as bright as she could.

'' They'd have to be foolish not to be proud of you, '' he meowed, '' and you are as beautiful as you ever were, just live your mother. '' He purred. It was true, Silverblaze came from a family of stunningly beautiful cats. It was a shame what had happened to the family. '' Things will get better, and perhaps your leg will heal a bit more. In the end it was all a part of StarClan's plans. ''

"Thank you." Silverblaze couldn't help but think of how much she'd like to cuddle up in her mother's long fur right now, like she did when she was a kit. The thought of her mother's orange tabby fur had brought complete comfort for a few seconds. Her mother's scent was sweet, and her eyes were a dark green. Her mother was kind and strong, mental and physically. Her father was brave, and had once saved her mother's life. He had a gentle meow and it always had soothed her to sleep as a kit. He had gleaming pale fur and orange eyes that proved he truely had the heart of a cat from Lionclan. "Yes .... Starclan knows what they are doing. If they need my service as a warrior or a medicine cat, it's my job to do so."

Horsestar purred, '' Your valience is something every cat in the Clan could learn from, even myself... '' His voice turned softer, or softer than it usually was, '' I can relate to how you feel, Silverblaze. Many moons ago when I was young, about your age I suppose, I lost a loved one too. But time has healed me as it will you. You are following in StarClan's paw steps, even when they lead you into darkness, and there is no option that could be braver than that. ''

"Thank you for the kind words, but I'm just doing what I think is right." Silverblaze looked at her eye in the puddle one more time, and slowly, half limping, trotted more towards the back of the den, and silently tried to remember which herbs were which. "Shadowfire has gone to collect more catnip, or something like that." She tried to remember, but she had sadly inherited her mother's short term memory as well. "Well, he told me that while he's away, that I should try to remember everything." She glinted at them once more and turned her head to Horsestar. "And this is what Starclan is telling me what's right I suppose." She again turned her head towards the medicines of many uses. She knew she was doing what was right, and that's all that mattered, but somewhere deep in the heart she felt a spark of pride go off. Blinked and yet again silently tried to remember the uses of the pile of leaves in front of her.

Horsestar stepped forward and looked curiously at the herbs. As a kit his father had always told him he had the makings of a medicine cat because of his small paws, but it had been his mother who had encouraged him to be the best warrior he could be. '' Well if you need any help, you know I'm here, right? '' Though he would probably never speak it, he almost considered Silverblaze to be the daughter he had never had the chance to have. In fact, Silverblaze bore a slight resemblence to Willow anyway. He knew he could never replace Palefur, but that couldn't stop him from thinking of Silverblaze the way he did.

"Thank you, Horsestar." She closed her eyes for a few seconds, even if she couldn't see with one. After her parents died, she really didn't have anyone except her old mentor, and her new mentor. But Shadowfire could never be the caring tom Horsestar was. She had been socially awkward and too shy around cats she didn't know to ever make friends, but Horsestar had always been there instead. She felt like she could relate to him more. He had always believed in her and always told her she could be something great. Silverblaze had just always thought that anyone in her position would do the same as her, and couldn't see how strong she really was.

Horsestar carefully placed one yew leaf in the pile of yew leaves with a delicate paw. '' What has Shadowfire proposed for exercises for your leg? '' He asked Silverblaze.

"Lots of swimming." Silverblaze responded. "It's okay. I like to swim, but my long and heavy fur makes it rather ...err... difficult." She looked at her long, fluffy tail. "He also preposes a lot of upper body exercise. He says that even if my leg can't be strong, at least I can be healthy with my arms. I guess I'd still be able to fend off a cat or other animal if it was nessicary, but not for all the time in the world."

'' Well as long as you stay healthy that's what matters. '' Horsestar meowed, '' You'll be as fine as a medicine cat as you were a warrior. ''

Silverblaze went on with her work, as Horsestar left to arrange the evening partrols.
