Horsestar shook out his fur again. '' I'm sorry, Echosong, but I told you I don't like water... We aren't apprentices anymore... '' He meowed quietly.

Her head drooped lower. Standing, Echosong jumped to the opposite side of the river than her leader. "I get it." She whispered. Knowing she could outrun her leader, she turned and tore off into the forest, her tail streaming out behind her. You absolute idiot! How could you think he'd like that? He hates water! She raced off, her claws digging gouges into the earth.

Horsestar sighed, perhaps he had been a bit too harsh on her? But he wasn't blind, he knew that Echosong had some feelings for him, granted he didn't know how much. But he was older, he wasn't a young warrior like he used to be. Besides, even if he did have feelings to return to her, his heart would always be with Willow. He couldn't possibly betray Willow by loving another she-cat, that wasn't fair to her. But it wasn't fair to be rude to Echosong because of that. Horsestar hunched up his back muscles and leaped the river and then continued to follow Echosong, tracking her by her scent.

Echosong slowed as she neared camp. She'd come so far. A tear rolled down her cheek and she shook her head to dislodge it. You should've known. He still loves Willow. She sighed and pounced up a nearby tree, settling down in the crook of a branch. Perhaps she should go back and apologize for running off? No. Give him time to forgive me for being so forward first. She sighed softly. She knew she couldn't replace Willow. But she only wanted him to be happy again. Happy with her. I'd even give up my place as Deputy if it meant having his kits...... She sighed again.

Horsestar followed her scent almost all the way back to camp. He looked around for her and spotted her glowing green eyes up in a tree. '' Echosong I'm sorry I was rude to you, '' he called up to the she-cat.

Echosong stared at her paws and leaped down to stand beside her leader. She sighed and licked his shoulder respectfully. "No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. Either of them." She sat and wrapped her fluffy tail around her paws, staring down at the dirt. She just wanted him to like her like she liked him.

'' It's ok, Echosong. I shouldn't have reacted like a rotten little kit. I guess leadership has just taken a toll on my sense of fun. '' He meowed humorously with a slight smile. '' Next time I'll try not to be so touchy, as long as it's not by the river. ''

She smiled. "Care to go hunting with me? It's getting dark and I'm not a fan of being alone in the territory in the night time. Not usually."

Horsefoot nodded, '' Sure. I lost a rabbit earlier and I need to make up for it. Lead the way, '' he meowed.

Smiling, Echosong padded swiftly into the forest. She sniffed the air as she went, searching for prey. "Horsestar. There's a squirrel there by that beech tree. Why don't you circle around and scare it up the tree? I'll be waiting." she whispered. Without waiting for a response, Echosong sped to the tree and climbed it swiftly and silently, perching up in a hole in the wood. She smiled, remembering how her father had called her "Lil' Squirrely" when she was younger. She loved climbing almost as much as she loved swimming and she was thrilled to show off her skills to her leader.

Horsestar nodded, but Echosong had already disappeared up the tree. He stealthily circled around the tree, his paws making almost no sound at all. He was about a tail length away from the squirrel now. He spotted a brittle stick on the ground next to him and purposely snapped it under his paw, startling the squirrel and sending it scampering up the tree.

The squirrel shot upward, flying straight past her hole. Echosong jumped out, snagged her claws on a nearby branch, and hauled herself upward, flying toward the top. She pinned the squirrel on a slender branch and killed it, but as she turned to climb down, the sheer height got to her. She dropped the squirrel in shock. It hit the ground with a sickening thud heartbeats later. She'd never been this high before. "Horsestar.....?" She called softly, crouching on her branch.

Horsestar head the squirrel's body hit a few branches then land on the ground with a soft thud. He flicked his ear in annoyance. How disrespectful, Echosong should know better. But then he heard her scared meow from high up in the tree, much higher than he had expected her to go. '' Why are you up so high? '' Horsestar called to her.

Echosong's legs shook and she closed her eyes tightly. "I.... T-The squirrel...." her voice shook. "Horsestar.... I'm scared....."

'' Now listen to be, Echosong. You are deputy of RushClan, you got this. Just follow my voice and find your way down, but be careful. '' He called up to her calmly and slowly. He knew how dangerous climbing and falling could be. That was how Brindlefrost had hurt her leg once as an apprentice.
